Toto Elizabeth Opola, born in 1948 and passing away on October 28, 1989, emerged from humble beginnings, ultimately becoming a dedicated midwife. Nurtured by her parents, Papa Amedoi Eriakimu and Toto Asio Yupenia Amedoi Eriakimu and mother Asio Yupenia, she faced various challenges, including a childhood hip infection that impacted her development, likely influencing her son, Dr. John Ekure, to pursue Orthopaedic Surgery.
Despite hardships during her education, walking long distances to school without shoes, and enduring scarcity of lunch and clothing, Toto persevered. She trained as a midwife at Ngora School of Nursing and Midwifery, where she later secured employment. Her dedication and determination served as a testament that anyone can succeed with resolve.
Toto's life unfolded with marriage to the late Papa Sudulaki Odeke, and the birth of her children, Dr. John Ekure, Atim Catherine, and Akurut Dorothy. Her midwifery career spanned various healthcare facilities, including Ngora Freda Carr Hospital, Bukedea Health Centre IV, Malera Health Centre III, Kanyum Health Centre III, and Kumi Health Center
In the late 80s, Toto faced heightened challenges due to the insurgency in the Teso region. Engaging in immunization efforts with UNEPI, she survived attacks by rebels during field visits. Despite these adversities, she remained a hardworking midwife who loved her job, family, and friends.
Toto Opola constantly sought to enhance her skills through courses and seminars, overcoming issues like poor accommodation, low pay, and school fee challenges. She prioritized her children's education, leaving a lasting message to Dr. John Ekure to read and study hard a week before her passing.
Over 30 years since her tragic demise, Toto's memories and struggles persist. In her honor, The Elizabeth Opola Foundation has been established to provide educational opportunities for underprivileged youth, reflecting her belief in the transformative power of education toward a brighter future.
